Programs

The services KEY provides are just a small part of our business.  When we combine our personnel, knowledge, technical capabilities, and experience, we create PROGRAMS to best serve our clients.  These programs have been developed from the needs of our clients and the requirements of the regulators.

EPA, along with many state environmental agencies, has recognized the impacts of newly identified compounds effecting our water, land and air.  As the effects of these chemical compounds require additional studies, our clients are seeking support to identify their risk and associated potential liability.  KEY is evaluating the impact of the “family” of perfluoro compounds such as PFAs and PFOs, along with other identified emerging contaminants, endocrine disruptors, pharmaceutical and personal care products, nanomaterials, tungsten, polybrominated biphenyls, perchlorates, and others.

With our history of site investigation, hydrogeological evaluations, remedial design, and process chemistry, KEY can be a valuable partner in managing these newly identified contaminants.

Emerging Contaminants

Financial firms are acquiring the unused real estate assets of various companies in order to develop marketable properties.  Prior to completing these transactions, it is incumbent upon the buyer to review and evaluate any environmental requirements and determine the risk factors associated with acquiring the asset.  During this initial phase, KEY assists clients by reviewing property historical data and permits along with any other environmental issues.  We also provide cost estimates for the short and long term management of these activities.

After the sale is closed, KEY and our affiliate FTS assist our clients with the permit transfers, regulatory negotiations, sampling, groundwater management, and development of engineering plans for site remedial actions.  This combination of hydrogeological evaluations, engineering studies and planning, data management, regulatory analysis, construction management, and cost analysis have made KEY a critical partner in assisting our clients with these multi-million dollar projects.

For both industry and public systems, the impact of age and new emerging issues has resulted in system underperformance.  To meet the new regulatory requirements many owners  are now looking to redesign, upgrade or replace their water management systems.

KEY is advancing these programs through evaluations and designs that allow the client to meet the regulatory standards.  For aging units, providing additional equipment or treatment stages often achieves this goal.  in some industrial settings, the system size is reduced to focus on the current discharge requirements.

With an eye to the future, our programs supporting  water treatment focuses on treatment goals, budgets, and new and future discharge requirements.

Water and Wastewater Design

Long before the first shovel of dirt is moved, KEY supports the project developer's team.  Approvals from regulatory boards and community groups require responsiveness and diligence to address the particular requirements for each site.  As a partner with our developers, KEY assists with all phases of a site development, including site assessments, E&S plans, layout, and construction certification. With the use of CADD and 3D design we can bring a project "to life" to address the potential site uses and alternatives.  This also allows for quick adjustments if site conditions change while under construction.

Our regulatory knowledge and engineering capabilities assists the owner in meeting all of the environmental regulations and site conditions for development projects.

Site Development

Whether a site is regulated under CERCLA, RCRA, or one of the state "Brownfield" programs, the goal is to reduce the environmental impacts of a site and where practical, return the site to a usable asset. KEY has the expertise to assist from the investigation stage through potential site re-uses.  Our experience in working with the regulating groups to meet, and many times exceed, the site remedial goals has helped KEY to develop long term client relationships and ensure potential future use for many  abandoned and neglected sites.

Our program keeps the clients' end goals in mind from site commencement through completion.

Impacted Properties

A major challenge for the power industry is the impact from the Coal Combustion Residue (CCR) rules.  Even more challenging has been the geotechnical properties of the various landfills and impoundments that became the disposal units for CCR.

KEY has the in-house expertise to evaluate and design caps and enclosure systems to manage CCR.  Included is KEY's innovative and patented "Sustainable Habitat" system.  The use of a synthetic liner along with cap design features creates a natural setting for wildlife, while reducing the borrow material usage and costs for closure.

At the time KEY came into existence the “new” state based rules for “brownfield” property transfers were in their infancy.  KEY worked with property transfer projects in multiple states and developed a work practice that allowed buyers and sellers to confidently proceed with the sales.

By using the “risk based” and “no further action” approaches available under the rules, KEY utilizes our expertise in geology, hydrogeology, engineering, and state regulations to support our clients’ property goals.

State Based Brownfields

KEY has developed a programmatic approach to support multiple sites for clients that takes advantage of several "efficiencies" providing focused and cost saving solutions.  Through this approach, KEY can implement and test remedial activities that can often be applied to similar sites, thus reducing the "site by site" engineering, regulatory approvals, and site implementation time and costs. Whether a site is regulated under CERCLA, RCRA, or one of the state "brownfield" programs, the goal is to reduce the environmental impacts of a site and where practical return the site to a usable asset. KEY has the expertise to assist from the investigation stage through the potential site re-uses.

Our program keeps the clients end goal in mind from site commencement through completion.

KEY specializes in evaluation and implementation of in situ treatment solutions.  In many cases, this remedy results in both a practical and cost-effective means of reducing or even eliminating contaminated soil and/or groundwater.

Our experience includes Soil Vapor Extraction, Soil Stabilization, Pump and Treat Systems, Reactive Barrier Walls, Chemical Injection, and Funnel and Gate Systems.  We also continually evaluate new and immerging applications for mitigation of contaminants.
